Groundsman of the Year 2014 announced

The Nottinghamshire FA are delighted to announce their 2014 FA Groundsman of the Year!

The FA’s Groundsman of the Year Award was set up back in 2002 to recognise the contribution and hard work of vitally important unsung heroes of the grassroots game and encourage the development of groundmanship throughout the country.

Christopher Churches, of Ruddington Village Parish Council, has scooped the gong for Nottinghamshire Groundsman of the Year 2014.

Chris, in his first year as Senior Groundsman at Ruddington Village, made a fantastic start to the season, drastically reducing the number of games lost through the bad weather with his hard work and dedication. Chris and his team maintain the whole Ruddington Parish estate and do a remarkable job in keeping the grounds in their best condition.

With in excess 140 games and 250 training sessions held on the grounds, roughly 13 hours goes into grounds maintenance every week by Chris and his team.

Ricky Stevenson, County Development Manager at The Nottinghamshire FA said: “Year on year grounds-people nationwide dedicate an ever increasing amount of hours into the grassroots game to ensure the game can be played how it should, on high quality surfaces.

Chris has made excellent progress and we’re delighted that he’s been awarded Nottinghamshire’s Groundsman of the Year, it’s thoroughly deserved.

A special mention must also go to Christopher Wilcock (Bilsthorpe FC) and Colin Briggs (Newark Flowserve FC) who were shortlisted but narrowly missed out this year.“

The majority of football in this country is played outside the Football League. Quality pitches are therefore essential for the development of football at every level. Grassroots groundsmen, the vast majority of whom are volunteers, play a huge role in ensuring pitches are in their best possible condition, week in, week out.

Chris will now be invited to The Nottinghamshire FA Awards Evening 2014 to collect his award as well as go forward for contention in the National Competition.
