We are delighted to announce Ian ‘Charlie’ McParland as a special guest at The Nottinghamshire FA Coaches Club end of season event at St Georges Park on Saturday 28th July.
Charlie will be at the event for most of the day and will take part in a Q&A session about his career as a player, youth academy coach, and manager in the Football League.
Charlie will need no introduction to the footballing public of Nottinghamshire, having played 280 times for Notts County in the 1980’s scoring 90 goals. He went on to play for numerous clubs both sides of the border, and had a spell in Hong Kong in the mid 1990’s.
When his playing career ended, Charlie turned his attention to coaching, starting out at Nottingham Forest’s academy with the U13s. He worked his way through the academy system with the Reds, and worked through his coaching badges. Charlie is now a UEFA Pro Licence coach, who also has the FA Youth Award, and has recently begun the Advanced Youth Award at St Georges Park.
When Gary Megson was sacked by Forest in early 2006, the club turned to Charlie and Frank Barlow and after a fantastic run the team just missed out on the League 1 play-offs, something that looked impossible when the pair took charge. At the end of the season Colin Calderwood was named as the new Forest boss and Charlie was part of his coaching team, until he made an emotional return across the Trent to Meadow Lane to take the reins at the Pies.
Charlie was in the hot seat at the Lane for two years, but left when the club was taken over and Sven-Goran Erikson was named as the new Director of Football by the mysterious new owners, Munto Finance.
Charlie has spells at Ipswich under Roy Keane and joined Paul Hart at Swindon before finding his way back to Nottingham, on the red side of the Trent.
Charlie is a regular on TeamTalk on Notts TV, where he is not afraid to air his views on football in his adopted home City.
There’s still time to sign up for what should be a fantastic event, which will round off a brilliant first season for The Nottinghamshire FA Coaches Club.
