The Greatest Football Games of Remembrance Project

The Nottinghamshire FA have become one of many partners in this exciting project, and football teams in Nottinghamshire can get involved!

The Nottinghamshire FA have become one of many partners in this exciting project, and football teams in Nottinghamshire can get involved!

The Opportunity

As the Nation’s game and the Soldiers’ game, with a football club at the heart of most communities, a military football match between the British Army and the German Armed Forces can capture the imagination, in Britain and the Commonwealth, of our First World War centenary commemorative efforts.

The Ambition

To deliver the “Greatest Games of Remembrance” to suitably mark the unique commemoration of the 100th anniversary of the First World War Armistice.

The Project

The Project will mark the Centenary of the end of First World War through: National education, awareness and legacy programmes; extensive community engagement with national grassroots football teams and local communities, and a football themed national commemorative spectacle. The project will be non-profit making and any surplus will be donated to nominated local, national and international charities.

  • There is a Women’s game between the British Armed Forces and German Armed Forces at Notts County FC at 12pm on Thursday 8th November – Tickets will be available soon
  • There is a Men’s game between the British Armed Forces and German Armed Forces at Nottingham Forest FC at 7pm on Thursday 8th November – download this letter for details as there are free tickets on offer, and for arranged coach parties the organising group are looking to offer financial support!

how you can get involved

To raise profile of this project we would like people to make a video tribute and post onto Social Media, click here for more information.

It is eye opening to discover just how many footballers served in the World War, a number of them losing their lives! If you do make a video tribute and post on Social Media please ensure that you tag @NottsFA as well, we will be choosing a few of the best video tributes and inviting them to the evening fixture on Thursday 8th November to take part in the half time activities/parade.

Please note that The Nottinghamshire FA are one of many partners to this project, any returns of forms or requests must be sent to gamesofremembrance@gmail.com.
