Notts County Academy Goalkeeping CPD Workshop

The latest Notts FA Coaches Club CPD session took us to Meadow Lane on Friday 26th January, where 50 coaches were treated to a fantastic insight into the world of the academy goalkeeping coach Alessandro Barcherini.

We were welcomed to the club by Academy Manager Jon Goodman, former Premier league and Republic of Ireland player, who joined the club in May last year. Jon outlined how the club were really keen to connect with the local community in Nottingham, and events such as the evenings workshop was a great way for them to do this, whilst helping the development of local coaches.

Alessandro, who joined the full time staff at County in September after leaving his role as Head of Football at Nottingham Trent University, then took centre stage. He delivered a fascinating and interactive workshop, which looked at the qualities and characteristics required to be a professional goalkeeper. He outlined what the club look for in young players when deciding whether to offer them a place in their Category 3 Academy.

He then looked at the most modern developments in goalkeepers, and spent some time looking at how David De Gea has brought new and pretty revolutionary thinking to his art. He showed examples of how De Gea stays on his line more than many goalkeepers do, instead of the traditional view of goalkeepers closing down attackers to narrow the angle. By staying where he is, only a couple of yards off his line, he forces the attacker to take another touch, giving defenders more time to recover.

He also demonstrated how De Gea stands up tall in his goal, and makes a number of saves with his feet, instead of using his hands when this is more appropriate.

We then witnessed Alessandro put 2 of the academy U16 goalkeepers through their paces with a session in the indoor 3G pitch at the ground.

Jon and Alessandro were then joined for a question and answer session by club psychologist Claire Davidson. There were some great questions about goalkeeping, player development, releasing of players and Claire gave a glimpse of her work with the first team through to the academy.  It sparked some really good conversation, the sort you often encounter at Coaches Club CPD events.

We are working with Claire to arrange a specific psychology workshop for Coaches Club members before the end of the season. We’ll let everyone know when we know more. Judging by the reaction from coaches in the room on Friday, we think this will be really popular so don’t delay when you see it advertised, get booked on.

We ended the evening with our Coaches Club raffle, which is free to enter for all who attend the event. The top prize of two tickets to a Notts County game was won by Brian Jackson and we also gave away a Nike football, a tactics board, first aid kit and a set of water bottles.

All that’s left for us to do is to send our thanks to Notts County for hosting our event, and for the donation of the match day tickets for the raffle. Jon, Alessandro, Claire and Foundation Phase GK coach Ryan Hudson made everyone welcome, and delivered a quality evening in a fantastic facility.

Thanks guys, we will be back.
